This is a common question at my class. We all know that stock cubes are high in salt and salt is one of the things that we are trying to limit in your baby’s diet as their kidneys are still developing.

The FSAI recommend a maximum salt intake per day of: 1g/day in 6-12month olds, 2g/day in 1-3 year olds and 3g/day 4-6 year olds. This is the maximum and not a target!

If you are early on in weaning I wouldn’t use ordinary stock cubes when cooking for baby. Think about your baby’s overall salt intake in the day/week – if they are having foods that are higher in salt then look at where you could cut back. 

Personally I didn’t use low salt stock cubes. Where possible I boiled up bones to make my own stock and then used herbs for flavouring. Dried or fresh herbs are perfect – just make sure they are well chopped. Even better have a few pots of herbs on your kitchen window or outside and as your baby grows up they will start to understand where food comes from. 

Some brands marketed as ‘LoSalt’ are actually high in Potassium and these are not recommended at all – for anybody.
